Stop paying bank fees in Canada

Paying $17 a month to hold your own money is one of the easiest leaks to fix. Switch once and you keep the savings every month, for good.

What fees really cost

Many chequing plans at the big banks cost about $11 to $20 a month unless you keep a minimum balance, often several thousand dollars sitting idle. At $16.95 a month, that's $203 a year and over $2,000 in ten years, before ATM, e-Transfer or overdraft fees.

What to look for in a no-fee account

  • No monthly fee, with no minimum balance needed to avoid it
  • Free everyday transactions: debit purchases, bill payments and Interac e-Transfers
  • Deposit insurance from CDIC or your provincial insurer
  • Cash access through ATMs you can use without fees
  • A good app with easy transfers and alerts

How to switch without missing a payment

  1. Open the new account and order your debit card.
  2. Move your direct deposit. Give your employer the new account details and wait for one paycheque to land.
  3. Move pre-authorized payments one by one: rent, phone, insurance, subscriptions, credit cards.
  4. Leave a small buffer in the old account for a month or two in case something you missed comes through.
  5. Close the old account once nothing new has hit it for a full month.
